Hello, my dear friends! Today I would like to tell you some words about The Acropolis of Athens.

In 1821, the Acropolis of Athens was the scene of violent fighting, and one of the main foci of the war between the Greeks and Turks.

Immediately after the war began in March 1821, a detachment of the Greek rebels laid siege to the Acropolis, but the siege was lifted by the Turks in the month of July. Turks during the heavy fighting inflicted severe damage to the Greeks and forced them into the plain.

In the month of November, Greeks again tried to take the Acropolis by storm. But this time all their attempts were in vain. Acropolis again showed its strength and geographical inaccessibility. The Greeks tried to take by storm the Acropolis from the south-west side: summed mines, conducted artillery shelling of the Turkish garrison. Finally, after the Greeks managed to spoil the water in the well, the southern part of the Acropolis, the thirst forced the Turkish garrison to surrender.

After the surrender of the Turks were taken prisoner by the Greeks themselves are not the best way, after killing half of the prisoners. The rest of the prisoners had been evacuated to foreign military courts, which watched as the unfolding conflict between Greeks and Turks.

An interesting fact that the Greek captain, who led the capture of the Acropolis was accused of conspiring with the Turks and placed in the Frankish tower, where he spent several months in chains, and then was killed – he was thrown from the tower to the bastion wingless Nike.

In 1826, the Turks recaptured the Acropolis.

All attempts to recapture the Greek Acropolis were striking examples of tactical errors and misunderstandings, which were caused by the inconsistency between the Greek commanders. The climax came May 6, 1827, when the Greeks went to a frontal attack from the Piraeus. During the counterattack Turkish garrison commander Rashid Pasha, broke in two and a half thousand Greek soldiers. Now the Greeks had to negotiate an honorable surrender. 5 June 1827 the remnants of the Greek squad withdrew from the Acropolis.

Paradox, but the Acropolis in Athens was the last promenade Greek land, on which were the Turks. In the end, the Turks left the Acropolis voluntarily, after the armistice.

Battle of the Acropolis clearly illustrate all the cruelty of this war. For the wounded soldiers from both sides was almost no hope. The prisoners were killed and the Turks and Greeks.

And even the ancient monuments, which had great importance for the Greek people, Greek soldiers were ready to explode without any regret.

City Mukachevo has a long and glorious history. This is one of the most interesting pages of Transcarpathia. 1108 years have passed since the first written mention of the city.
